It was an unusual August night in the city. Still, like the quiet before something happens. You could hear a flower box drip and footsteps echoing on the sidewalk. Taxi and traffic noise was far and faint.
I passed the streetlight at First and 52nd Street and turned left into the corner market. The 52nd Street Market has a salad bar with cooked food for people like me who, admittedly, use my apartment oven usually as sweater storage.
Ayun Yuogin runs the shop and she owns it too. We call her Ann or Mama Annie if you're one of the little kids. Ann has a knack for knowing just what you'll be hungry for. She's a good East-West cook and coming to her market after work for a "by the ounce" meal feels like coming home.
Back to that August night. Ann has a garden in the back of the market with cafe tables and chairs, usually occupied as the market has a first come no rush policy with its regulars. In summer it has a stunning show of flowers and the grass can double as a picnic table or a fine place to read a book.
To get to the garden you first need to find it. In the back of the market, passed the ice machine and an old freezer is an archway that you'd never see without Ann gazing and nodding her head in the archways direction. She telepathically tells you where to go. It's her garden invitation to good customers and friends.
Once outside you can see the view beyond the garden and tables. Passed Anne's back courtyard wall are the backs of other NYC courtyards and tall buildings beyond.
Jack Boakes is Ann's stockboy and general helper. Ann found Jack living on the street when Jack was nine years old, nearly four years ago. Jack's room is Ann's cleaned back storage room with the big sky view window.
Jack looked up into the summer night sky. This was normal for Jack these nights as the Summer Vega Triangle of Altair, Deneb and Vega was lighting up the sky. Unusual though was a red light that formed an arrow pointing down to a green glowing island.
Jack wasn't the only one spotting the green isle. Sitting in the back garden that same night was an unusually tall man, Thorton Mueller. Thor's family is from an old Nordic line. His great grandfather explored Unicornia Isle during a Thule, Greenland Expedition. The explorers recorded their discoveries of Unicornia Isle. Thor's great grandfather later started the Unicornia Isle Historical Society in New York City. It's a branch of the New York City Explorer's Club.
Jack was filling empty coffee mugs in the garden when he saw, over Thor's big shoulder, a star map on the table with the Summer Triangle he had seen from his window. Jack asked Thor about the red arrow and green glowing light.
This conversation between Thor Mueller and Jack Boakes began the New Expedition to Unicornia Isle. Thor quickly realized that Jack has the gift of seeing Unicorns and Unicornia Isle in his mind's eye without the need of satellite vision.
Jack's vision mirrored Thor's map print that was taken using modern weather satelite vision. The Artic heat wave has dissipated the Isle's protective fog coating leaving the green valley open and glowing in the Summer Vega Triangle.
Ann, Thor Mueller, Jack, the Expedition Crew and the Unicornia Isle Historical Society of which I am Secretary is now sharing the news of the melting glacier and the Unicorns need of new temporary homes while they are in danger. Homes are needed until the Artic climate cools to normal and the glacier's protective fog returns. The Unicorns would appreciate other's like Jack, who have the gift of seeing the Unicorns in their minds eye, to please adopt a Unicorn.
The adopted Unicorn will be under your care for a full year. With your love, at the end of a year your Unicorn will have grown its wings.
The Unicorns have lost their protective fog. They are in danger.
The New Expedition is preparing to leave for Unicornia Isle. A journal will be kept by Jack, Thor and the team during the expedition. The journey and its adventures and discoveries will be logged for you to read. If you have adopted a Unicorn, the Team will do their best to personally locate your Unicorn while on the Isle.
